Update on the Social Security Fairness Act from the FOP-

From Howard Langston – Retired Board Member for KACP

Top Priorities in Brief

H.235/S. 484, the “Social Security Fairness Act”

At this writing, the House bill has two hundred and sixty-nine (269) cosponsors, more than a house majority!  Our goal now is to ask Representative John S. Tanner (D-TN), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Social Security, to consider the bill and put it to a vote.

In the Senate, we have twenty-three (23) cosponsors on S.484.  We’ll need to continue to build support for the bill to win consideration for it in this body.

Letter to Congressman McNulty

February 22, 2008

The Honorable Michael R. McNulty

Chairman

Subcommittee on Social Security

Committee on Ways and Means

U.S. House of Representatives

1129 Longworth House Office Building

Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Chairman McNulty:

I am writing to you on behalf of the Retired Members Section of the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police (KACP) to urge you and the Subcommittee to take action on H.R. 82, the “Social Security Fairness Act.”

The men and women of law enforcement are always given acknowledgement as vital to the safety and security of our nation.  When any candidate is running for office one of the most sought after endorsements is that of law enforcement.  Yet, to continue to take no action to pass the “Social Security Fairness Act” and repeal the “Windfall Elimination Provision” and the “Government Pension Offset” is to show that our government’s support of law enforcement is self-serving.

The very employees that have protected their communities for an entire career, most at the lower end of the pay scale, are shown by the WEP and GPO that the reward for a career of service to American cities and towns is to have the Social Security benefits to which they are entitled reduced because of this service.

(FOP Journal February 2008)

http://www.fop.net/publications/journal/Journal2008_02.pdf

The First Session of the 110th Congress came to an end the Friday before Christmas with the passage of a $555 billion spending bill that was signed by the President a few days before the New Year.  The Second Session will begin on 15 January in the House and 22 January in the Senate.  We intend to mount a strong campaign in support of Senate action on the collective bargaining bill (H.R. 980/S. 2123 - see page 1) and a concerted effort to bring the "Social Security Fairness Act" to a vote. We hope to have a huge turnout for this year's Day on the Hill event to help us reach these goals.

TOP PRIORITY UPDATE:

            "Social Security Fairness Act"

For some reason, the National Legislative Office received several e-mails and telephone calls from FOP members who claimed that the last issue of the Journal provided no update on this issue.  Some even went so far as to say we had abandoned all efforts to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) provision in current law.

Nothing could be further from the truth.
